RANDWICK SUSTAINABILITY HUB - Aug 26
A small group ventured through under the harbour to enjoy a tour of the Randwick Sustainability Park, part of the Randwick Environment Park.
The Environmental Park is 13 hectares of protected Banksia scrub bush land. In conjunction with the La Perouse Aboriginal Community, the Randwick Council and volunteers are working hard to protect the remaining banksia scrub and wetlands.
The whole area was once defence land being part of the naval stores. and was set apart from the community. Fifteen years ago, it was returned to the Randwick Council, and they have done an amazing job at developing ‘education and experiencing’ nature programs.
The Sustainability Hub was established at the same time and has a very active Permaculture Garden, demonstrating different vegetables growing without fertilisers and chemicals of any kind. It is run by volunteers, called the Permaculture Bees. It has a number of different gardens - an edible native plant garden, a cottage garden, native habitat etc and the ‘Bees’ they have a huge responsibility for a large area of not only the vegetable garden but all the native gardens in the Hub.
We were given a background talk and a 30 minute tour of the site by Helen, from the Sustainability Hub. We saw the outdoor classroom centre, the new WIRES rescue hospital, various gardens and then we set off ourselves on a 30 minute walk around the whole site.

It is an amazing green oasis on the middle of suburban Randwick and very well worth the visit.
