CONCORD WEST TO RHODES WALK - July 25

The July walk took members on a delightful walk from Concord West station to Rhodes.

As always, we began with our obligatory morning coffee.

Then it was time to set off, heading east past elegant homes (typical of Concord) until we came to the Concord Club and Majors Bay Reserve, an area of Sydney with sporting fields, parkland and mangroves.  Recent rain made some of the going a bit “squishy”, yet we all managed.

Then on past Yaralla House and Rivendell School to Brays Bay Reserve and McIlwaine Park.  The Dame Eadith Walker Estate, also known as Yaralla Estate, is 37 hectares of land on the banks of the Parramatta River at Concord The Estate is of outstanding significance to NSW, as it remains an exceptionally rare complete example of a large Edwardian private residential estate close to a major city.

Sydney Local Health District maintains the estate in accordance with the wishes of the Walker Trust.  Set up in the 1930s by the important mercantile and philanthropic Walker family, it is the largest community bequest of its era to survive in an intact form in NSW.

Towards the end of our walk a most poignant part was having the opportunity to view the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway – a moving tribute to those who fought so valiantly.

We ended for a picnic lunch at Bray’s Bay and the MacIlwaine Park.

Many thanks to Don for organising yet another great day out.
