ROSE SEIDLER HOUSE
This outing was a bit of a change of scene for the Gardening Group. On Wednesday the 25th September we had a group tour of the Rose Seidler House in Wahroonga.
We began by enjoying a delicious morning tea in North Turramurra. Then it was off to Wahroonga for our visit.
The house was designed by the then young architect Harry Seidler for his parents Rose and Max, the house overturned almost every convention of suburban home design to create a bold and optimistic vision for a new way of living. Construction began in 1948 but took nearly three years to complete because of the ongoing shortage of materials.
Upon completion it was ”the most talked about house in Sydney”, and today it’s considered an architectural icon.
All of us were totally amazed by Seidler’s design, particularly his use of light and glass throughout. And the surrounding gardens / bushland were an absolute delight to walk around.
All told, a great visit.
