WINDY RIDGE
The October Gardening outing this month (Wed 23rd Oct) was to Windy Ridge which has been voted one of Australia’s most beautiful gardens. There were 13 Probus members in the group. We arrived there for morning tea and some stayed on and had lunch in the garden followed by a tour around Mt Wilson in the afternoon.
Windy Ridge is a privately held garden located in the historic Mount Wilson, Blue Mountains. The first trees were planted there in 1880. Roger Davidson acquired the property in 1995. Roger had the garden redesigned, clearing out much of the overgrown existing garden with many dead trees. The result now 30 years later is a beautiful garden with lovely rhododendrons, azaleas, peoplies Japanese maples , hostas, hellebores, clematis, lilacs, ponds filled with waterlilies and many more. The rhododendrons were in full blooms as were the Japanese peonies. The flowers head on these were huge. Roger also has an extensive nursery from plants he has propagated.
We all very much enjoyed our visit and were in awe of how beautifully it is kept with only one outside gardener helping one or two days a week. In Mt Wilson itself we saw on our drive around many NSW Waratahs out in full bloom. The long drive was well worth it and we were blessed with perfect weather.
