ANNANDALE TO GLEBE WALK - MAY 25

28 keen walkers met at Central station to begin our exploration through Annandale and beyond on a sunny Monday, 5th May.

For most of us the first highlight had to be riding on a “bendy” bus.  Out of action, for a few years, due to a cracked chassis, around 80 were recently restored and have been put back into service around Sydney. A real treat.

After our obligatory morning coffee, this time at the Black Toast Café, we set off through the streets of Annandale.

The old terraces and other buildings were amazing – some in incredibly well-maintained condition. One example was the Hunter Baillie Memorial Presbyterian church completed in 1889.  A classic example of Gothic Revival architecture.  It is as big as some cathedrals!  And, of course, the trees and parks just added another dimension to the beauty of this area.

Our path led us to the famous Glebe Tramsheds, now a marketplace and shopping centre. The Rozelle Tramway Depot was always busy when it was built back in 1904, becoming an important interchange where people met and socialised on their way around the city.  Nothing has changed!

We then continued our walk through Jubilee Park and along the foreshore to Blackwattle Bay where we congregated for lunch while enjoying the view that included the graceful Anzac Bridge and the new Fish Markets currently under construction.

Following our lunch, it was a short stroll past the Blackwattle Bay dragon boats and the Sydney Secondary College to the Glebe Light Rail for the trip back to Central and the journey home.

Everyone had a fantastic day!
